Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a component of blood in which the platelets are concentrated in a limited volume of plasma. Platelets contain many growth factors that enhance wound healing and help to induce tissue regeneration. PRP is used to promote wound, bone and ligament/tendon repair. Harvesting the fPRP is a very straightforward procedure taking approximately 10 minutes. Venous blood is taken and mixed with a capture solution in the collection bag before being passed through Pall’s mixed mode column where platelets are captured. Back-flushing the harvest solution through the column recovers the fPRP into a syringe. Gel formation and platelet activation can be achieved by combining the fPRP with Thrombin. The procedure requires no power source or specialist equipment. Dr. Silverman will take the portion of the blood that is mainly made up of platelets which are rich in healing properties and inject it into the affect area.
Should the situation allow, we are also equipped to do a clinic based PRP procedure. This requires the use of a high-speed centrifuge and will produce a slightly more concentrated dose of platelets. Both systems are very effective, with each having specific advantages based on the particular case.
